This is unquestionably one of the well known and extensively celebrated Hindu festivals. It symbolizes the victory of the good over evil. The 1st day is known as Dhanteras which is followed by Narak Chaudas held on the 2nd day, it is also known as Choti Diwali. The first day begins the Diwali celebrations. The real festival of lights is celebrated on the 3rd day. This festival is celebrated in the memory of victory of Lord Ram over Rawan. Arrays of diyas are lit to welcome the Lord. On this day, he was also crowned as the King of Ayodhya. Fireworks also take centre stage to mark the celebrations. The 4th day is devoted to the respect of mount Govardhan. It is known as Govardhan pooja. This day is symbolic representation of Lord Krishna's achievement of lifting the Govardhan. This was done to provide protection to people from the rains and hurricane made by Lord Indra to deatruy the village.

Last day is celebrated as Bhai Dooj which marks the holiness of the Brother-Sister bond. The celebrations is devoted to the brother sister relationship. The festival is also celebrated by Buddhists in Nepal, a majority-Hindu country, particularly the Newar Buddhists. In India and Nepal, Diwali is now considered to be a national festival, and the aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed by most Indians and Nepalese regardless of faith.
